Vista West Ranch - fall of 2014

We had an absolute blast at our wedding. What we wanted was a special day to celebrate with our friends that fully matched our personalities and would leave our friends and family thinking "Yep, that's exactly what I would have pictured for Angela and Greg."  We wanted it to be personal more than perfect, so we just planned with that in mind, without trying to compete with elaborate Pinterest ideas, other weddings we'd been to, or flawless wedding blog posts. We had an extremely talented friend do the ceremony music, we had a cookie cake (complete with the Cookie Monster song during the cake cutting) along with Amy's Ice Cream, we had Buc-ee as our cake topper (who in Texas doesn't love Buc-ees?), we had fajitas for dinner, and we had our dog as the ring bearer.  The most memorable parts of the day for me were the flower girl (my niece) going back to the aisle mid-ceremony to pick up the flowers she had dropped along the aisle on the way in and my dad's toast at the beginning of the reception (had people crying, then laughing, the crying again).  The best advice I have for a couple planning their wedding is to not get wrapped up in the planning and everyone else's ideas and expectations for the event. Don't let anyone convince you that you care more about a certain aspect than you actually do (I promise no one even remembers that didn't go with fancy china at the wedding).  Just think about the two of you as a couple, plan your day to enjoy it, and remember that it's the life ahead of you that's the most important part!

Joyce -N- Joshua / Hacienda del Lago Wedding Photography / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

From Joyce and Joshua:

From the moment we got engaged, there was one thing we were certain of: the wedding had to be simple and it had to be laid back, just like our style.  Yes, there were certain elements we had to have, but at the same time it would be completely representative of our unique, easy-going personalities.  We chose the stunning outdoor location at Hacienda Del Lago and secured Suellen at Everything's Possible to coordinate.  Over the next year, we decided on the essentials and selected Fresh Off The Truck food truck to cater, the super-excellent Mel from She-n-He Photography, JR Digital Video to record thoughtful video of the entire day and Marquee Linens to provide simple, yet elegant linens.  Eric from Penguin Entertainment kept the party going with his great music selections and ability to read the crowd.

In the end, everything turned out better than we could have hoped for.  We're extremely happy we chose the vendors we did, because they were able to tailor everything to match our styles and made sure the day embodied us completely.  We couldn't have done it without them.  The only thing I would have done differently is I wouldn't have stressed over the decorations as much; because when the day was over, everyone was there to have a good time and not critique the decor.

Ragan -N- Harley / Lighthouse Hill Ranch Wedding / Johnson City Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Ragan -N- Harley - Super sweet and unbelievable crafty folks.

The couple showed up for their wedding at Lighthouse Hill Ranch two days early with a trailer in tow. In that time they constructed a hinged set of double doors for the couple to walk through on their way to the alter; a farm table to compliment their shabby/ chic theme, which they MADE from SCRATCH; lastly and most notably, they design and built their own alter, which was built to enhance the 360 degree views from the top of  the Johnson City, Tx high peak. The stage had to not only be beautiful but also structurally sound, it held both Harley and Ragan and their entire wedding party plus the "Knot-tyer".  The stage was built from recycled palette wood and also features a chandelier for the couple to stand under while receiving their vows. All of these projects were completed IN TWO DAYS!   Recycled glass bottles for flowers stacked on recycled books from goodwill, handmade napkins in the couple's signature mustard/grey/ivory, table numbers in frames made with buttons, and recycled tin cans with doilies as candle holders all graced the tables of the reception area. The handmade napkins after the wedding will be recycled back into a quilt for the couple to have in their home. Harley's mom constructed the napkins and personalized clutches for Ragan's bridesmaids. All the decorations, guy's boutonnieres, and table centerpieces were also handmade by Ragan and Harley. The BBQ style food from Werner's Catering was outstanding and Classic Cakes by Lori created an absolutely awesome tongue in cheek replica of the Harley Davidson logo for Harley's groom's cake! All of the DIY goodness was executed flawlessly and in a timely manner by Britany Krause, Social Butterfly Events. Ragan and Harley say they couldn't be happier with their day, it was ALL them and some careful choosing of some awesome vendors! Nice Job Everybody.

Nyssa -N- Brett / Palm Door Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Nyssa -N- Brett's wedding at Palm Door was beautiful, theatrical and full of life and promise. Nyssa, together with her family and friends, created the wonderful beaded flower bouquets. They were perfect, even when they snagged on her dress in the middle of ceremony (I left those shots out.) It's like I tell every couple, it's the little things, the slip-ups and folly that make a wedding charming and memorable. It was no different here, Nyssa and her sister giggled their way through unsnagging the ruthless flowers. The couple imagined trees for their theme, and with the help of her sister and brother-in-law they were able to accomplish the look with theatrical flair, blue gobos and tree limb cut outs. Pink Avocado put together a beatiful vegetarian spread for the couple and their guests. The flower girls looked like little fairy princesses in their custom brown bodices and a HUGE bell of tulle in turquoise and brown, and they both lasted the entire night, and in their outfits! Nyssa wore jewels and carried a handkerchief of her grandmother, who incidentally wasn't well enough to make the trek so they skyped the entire wedding back to her grandparents at home. Nyssa's Dad in his commanding stature came into the tiny bridal suite and looked across room to Nyssa's mom and said "Can you believe THIS is happening right now?" Then he launched into the story about how he and Nyssa's Mom met and how amazing it was that they were here, at this moment, celebrating their daughter's wedding. These are the moments I love, this is why I do this. Nyssa, in turn, surprised her dad by making "Yellow Submarine" their Father/Daughter dance. Her dad is clearly a huge Beatles fan. The love in this family and in this wedding was infectious. It was a great event and super fun party, I am so happy for you both.

Now, let's have dinner ;)

blog love - Off Beat Bride - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

A little love from Off Beat Bride this morning.

A skyped elopement was shot and broadcast from The Inn at Wild Rose Hall.

Amanda -N- Jason - a destination elopement - Inn at Wild Rose Hall - Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

hand made, DIY, button bouquet, blue, Inn Wild Rose Hall Amanda and Jason met on an online dating service. Perfect match. They love the same things, they laugh at each other's jokes. They are so fun. To say that Amanda is obsessed with owls would be a gross understatement. When Jason proposed to Amanda he rented and wore a gigantic owl costume and she only knew it was him cause she spotted his shoes underneath. She said yes and the date was set for July 3. Then somewhere in the mix they decided to instead elope. They found a location, The Inn at Wild Rose Hall in Austin, Tx from Offbeat Bride. Austin was not a place that either had ever been. They picked it out of the clear blue sky from only having seen the  pictures on Offbeat Bride. They invited all of their guests to an engagement party on May 15 in WI. Jason even took a call from one of their guests and said "Yeah, we're right around the corner."

They and their 2 guests, myself and their officiant turned off our cell phones and turned on the cameras and the rest is history. It was a  elopement. They also had a reception for friends and relatives in WI on their planned July 3rd.

Amanda is a DIYer and she made her bouquet, the boutonnieres, handbags for she and her "bridesmaids," and invitations.  She carried it all to Austin in their suitcases. She wore her Grandmother's pearls and a very Marilyn gown. They hired a personal chef to prepare their first meal as husband and wife, The Red Headed Chef. What did they have you ask? Diner food. Omelets, bacon, home-fries, and local artisan bread. And to complete their quadruple threat of great Austin vendors, The Knot Tyer. He really took the time to get to know them and was able to connect with them even before they came for their wedding day. It was one of our favorites.

Amanda -N- Jason - A Skype Elopement - Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

skyped elopement at The Inn at Wild Rose Hall

I recently had someone ask me why we didn't do any sneak peeks! Well, I'll tell you, I get so excited about the weddings I photograph, I find it almost impostible to narrow down to a few images the entire feeling of a whole wedding. And this, with only 5 participants was no exception. Amanda and Jason are so lovely they just wanted to have this special moment all to themselves. It was beautiful, barely any technical difficulties as they Skyped their elopement to a completely surprised room full of relatives in WI. There is no telling at this time as they make their way back to WI what their wrath will be. But on Sunday at The Wild Rose Inn in Austin, Tx, there was nothing but romance in the air.

I'm so happy for your guys. Congratulations!
